ABSTRACT

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007 Summary for Policymakers states that “carbon dioxide emissions will continue to contribute to warming and sea-level rise for more than a millennium due to the time scales required for removal of this gas from the atmosphere.” Scientific studies have determined that present day's renewable technologies are sufficient to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoid some of the worst aspects of climate change. The water problem can go relatively unnoticed until a community hits a drought, but as the world warms and dries people can expect more droughts. In 2018, 23 Unites States states had no state-level plans of any kind regarding water supply resiliency and climate adaptation. Heat islands can affect communities by increasing summertime peak energy demand, raising air conditioning costs, adding to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, triggering heat-related illness and mortality, adding to water costs, contributing to water pollution, and adding to regional aridification.
