ABSTRACT

This chapter presents tools that provide the foundational knowledge required to teach any style of physical yoga and reviews the principal components of body dynamics. The relationship between mind and body is discussed in an overview of embodiment theory, fundamentals of kinesiology, and principles of movement. The concept of levels is considered through the theory of pedagogical approximation – the alignment of lessons to the knowledge base of students. A detailed discussion of the four basic components of teaching – theory, method, technique, and form – are introduced, described, and their hierarchical relationship established. The chapter concludes with applications of theoretical perspectives on teaching and learning. An appendix with practical exercises is included at the end of this chapter.
