ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the impact that the popularity of yoga has had on the profession of teaching, the emergence of the “industry of yoga”, and the proliferation of teacher training programmes. The various ways yoga has become aligned with social institutions (medicine, fitness, spirituality) is discussed along with the effects this has had on the way practitioners view the practice, the efficacy, and the uses of yoga. The ideal of “community” as a way of defining yoga both globally and locally is critically evaluated. The difficulties of sustaining a career in yoga teaching, both practically (concerning time, interest, stamina) and financially, are addressed. The distinctions between teacher, practitioner, and student are articulated to clarify the different demands of each role. An appendix with practical exercises is included at the end of this chapter.
