ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the dynamics of power within the yoga studio and other teaching contexts. The status and role of teacher and student are examined through behavioural strategies found in the manipulation of territory and personal space. The implications of dominance and submission and how they are employed appropriately in the teaching context are considered. The importance of creating and maintaining appropriate boundaries is noted as is the violation of these boundaries (the critical issue of “somatic dominance”). The authority exerted by organisations, teachers, studio cultures, and “tribal” membership is critically examined as is its impact on teaching. Particular consideration is given to the meaning of touch, the important role of touch, and the future of touch in the context of yoga teaching. An appendix with practical exercises is included at the end of this chapter.
