ABSTRACT

Yoga has been a discipline reliant on the teachings of the past; its evolution, however, will entail that it embraces new developments in the future. This chapter imagines the future of yoga in light of technological advancement, scientific discoveries, and cultural changes. The future of the yoga studio, and the way teaching will be delivered, is considered, as are the pros and cons of classes, courses, workshops, and training formats. The prospects offered by new technologies for both teaching and the performance of yoga are explored, and aesthetic possibilities are imagined. The conditions for creating a legacy of the modern practice are reviewed. The chapter concludes with an appeal for continued critical inquiry and the recognition of the necessity of embodied, embedded research by teachers and practitioners who wish to investigate and to further the discipline’s evolution. An appendix with practical exercises is included at the end of this chapter.
