ABSTRACT

Setting up a group is a particularly helpful way of introducing children to a new concept or way of seeing the world. This chapter presents the case study of a storytelling group led in a primary school. This will give a taster of how to use therapeutic play in a group format. Each child who took part in this group went on their own heroic journey. The author has included notes about these individual journeys, and given a six-week group timetable of what to consider for each step of the journey. The house-tree-person projective assessment technique developed by John Buck was used weekly to assess the children's unconscious difficulties. The chapter also presents different types of theoretical approaches used by group leaders to produce change. The approaches include psychoanalytic approach, group approach, narrative therapy approach, behaviour therapy approach and developmental approach.
