The referral process to external intervention services has never been more complex. Waiting lists for CAMHS support have doubled since I published my first book in 2020. Wherever possible, I recommend schools find creative ways to offer further support within the school environment in order to avoid exclusions. This is much easier for children to accommodate than having to leave school to attend an appointment. It's why I believe every school should have at least one qualified counsellor or play therapist on permanent staff. Investing in training for these staff is going to make the experience of ‘further support' more cohesive for all concerned.
