ABSTRACT

The hero (child) is faced with something that makes them begin their adventure. This might be a problem or a challenge they need to face and overcome. Sometimes school staff become aware that the child is facing 'the Call' only when the child goes into some kind of crisis. This chapter presents a case study looking at the Call in relation to adapting to home being without a parent, a mother, and the challenge of what it means to find 'home' in that context. It provides a lesson plan for expanding the concept of home and helping children to draw a picture of a house, a tree and a person. This is known as the House-Tree-Person Projective Test, which is used to explore a person's cognitive, emotional and social functioning. In play therapy, a child's drawings are seen not only as objects, but also as an embodiment of the transference and echo of the unconscious aspects of the therapeutic relationship.
