ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the refusal of the call in the context of a childhood bereavement. Whenever a child or adult is faced with traumatic life events, particularly the loss of a loved one, the ability to survive the emotional and physical pain associated with the event will be influenced by the individual's level of personal resilience. Factors associated with resilience include secure attachments to significant others, absence of early loss and trauma, high self-esteem, social empathy and an easy temperament. Bereavement usually affects a whole family. Any loss resonates with previous losses, which are often reawakened. Making a memory box is a very powerful exercise to do as the child is literally formulating some of their feelings about their parent. Encourage them to keep this box with them and to hold it when they feel sad or lonely.
