ABSTRACT

The mentor is one of the archetypes drawn from the depth psychology of Carl Jung and the mythic studies of Joseph Campbell. This chapter reviews the mentor as Christopher Vogler does in his book, The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers. All three of these ‘modern' men help to understand the mentor's role in humanity, in the myths that guide everyone lives, including religions, and in the storytelling. The mentor gives the hero the supplies, knowledge and confidence required to overcome their fear and face the adventure. Teachers can provide children with the secure base that makes them feel safe enough to take on their challenges. One way they can do this is by offering the children the tool of creating a mandala, which will help them to meet their inner mentor and activate their inner wisdom. Through doing this, and being safely held by the teacher in the relationship, they will learn to trust themselves.
