ABSTRACT

The hero leaves his ordinary world for the first time, and crosses the threshold into adventure. This step may seem almost inevitable, but it also represents a choice the hero is making. It is a door through which the hero must pass for the story to really begin. When the child is ready to cross the threshold it generally means that they have begun the process of identifying themselves through a metaphor which has appeared in either a story or their play. Metaphor gives children a, safe distance from which to identify with characters going through similar struggles. The character's journey enables them to express their feelings, and ultimately resolve their inner and outer conflicts. The exercise in this chapter expands on the concept of moulding/self-reflection, and helps children to form the shape of themselves in the clay. Clay therapy explains how clients can touch that sacred part of themselves that might have been shut down through trauma.
