ABSTRACT

What does it mean to trust? How can we mobilise the concept of trust to create shared, ethical and inclusive futures with emerging technologies? In this chapter, I interrogate the role trust plays in how technological futures are anticipated and imagined by industry, government, engineers and technology design stakeholders and players. I show how their quantified and monetised visions of trust are often not realistic, largely because they fail to align with the way that trust actually comes about. I argue that we need to account for everyday trust as it emerges in the real circumstances in which we live and imagine emerging technologies in everyday life. I explain the importance of seeking new generative ways to complicate dominant narratives with everyday notions of trust and to invoke new dialogues. Through this approach we might create ethical and responsible interdisciplinary sites of trust and construct a shared way forward towards ethical futures.
