ABSTRACT

Through analyzing the data collected in the study, this chapter demonstrates why and how the hosting universities in Mainland China have influenced Hong Kong students' decision to pursue undergraduate programs as the major pulling forces. Six universities, which offer individual enrollment opportunities through special admission schemes for Hong Kong students, are selected as cases. Three elite universities – Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Fudan University – played the role of active recruiters in attracting their targeted students with higher academic scores. Three other universities – Sun Yat-sen University, Jinan University, and Huaqiao University – with long heritage of taking in Hong Kong students have nuancedly taken a more proactive approach aiming at different groups of students. Their respective strategies in encouraging students' choice of studying there are analyzed.
