ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the roles the parents played in shaping the educational choice of the students in their pursuit of university education in Mainland China. According to the attitudes of the parents toward the students' choice of mainland education and the actions or level of involvement the parents took in influencing the students, four types of parents – engaging, supportive, opposing, and neutral – are identified. How and why these parents exerted their influence are scrutinized. The place of origin of the students, that is, whether they are born and raised locally in Hong Kong or migrants from Mainland China, as well as the socioeconomic status of their family matter.
