ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the challenges faced by healthcare systems worldwide and focus on the role of health cooperatives in society while clarifying the identity of cooperative organisations. Global healthcare systems have undergone centuries of evolution, influenced by beliefs, scientific advancements, commercial influences, and social forces. Recognising the interconnection between healthcare and other sectors like education, industry, and agriculture is essential, and the significance of a holistic approach is highlighted. Economic ideologies have played a significant role in shaping healthcare models and their outcomes. To address global health challenges effectively, it is crucial to understand the interconnected nature of healthcare with various sectors and adopt a comprehensive approach. Health cooperatives have demonstrated success in diverse societies by adapting to the interests of their members. They play a vital role in achieving sustainable development goals and mitigating health crises by bridging gaps in healthcare access and displaying flexibility in financing. Considering the potential of health cooperatives, they should be regarded as a relevant option in pursuing sustainable healthcare and improving overall health outcomes.
