ABSTRACT

As we continue to navigate the challenges of virtual learning—whether they be intermittent or regular—we continue to believe that prioritizing social emotional learning and the development of social emotional competence in both children and adults is critical to overall success, both in school and in life. For years, schools have mistakenly seen SEL as a quick fix for problem behaviors or a crisis intervention. In the virtual classroom it is essential that we remember SEL is a process, an approach practiced over time. As we look to forge deep and meaningful connections with our students via the digital space we must give students the space to get to know themselves, and give us the time to get to know them. For many of us, human connection is what called us to education. If we take care of our own Social Emotional Competence and well-being, then we can be emotionally available to others and connect with our colleagues and students more authentically.
