ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the data on women in the music industry providing case studies of women taking on leadership roles in the music business. It commences with the research on the gender imbalance in the music industry and the findings of that research which identifies sexism and sexual harassment as being some of the barriers for women entering the music industry. It includes examples of women who have taken on leadership roles in the recording industry, music management, music journalism, music festivals, artistic direction, curation and programming.
