ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the challenges faced by women in gaining senior leadership roles as conductors of major orchestras which represents leadership at the top of the musical hierarchy. It highlights the careers of women who have been pioneers in overcoming the challenge faced by women aspiring to lead orchestras. This is followed by a survey of contemporary women who have negotiated successful careers conducting major international orchestras cataloguing their legacies.
