ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses how women have responded to the sexism of the electronic music scene, an area in which women have been particularly marginalised, to take on leadership roles as successful composers and performers. It reviews some of the women pioneers in electronic music who have responded to the new technologies as they emerged in the 20th century. It looks at some of the significant inventions and innovations that women have contributed to the development of electronic music. There is a review of women adopting electronic inventions in contemporary popular music as well as in sound production. I touch upon females progressively emerging as disk jockeys.
