ABSTRACT

Geert Hofstede is identified with an important research stream within business regarding cultural differences and their implications. Advocates praise Hofstede’s model as a valuable means of simplifying complex cultural and social issues, some critics complain that the model is overly simplistic. In a nutshell, the Hofstede model evaluates and juxtaposes national cultures using a variety of “dimensions” to do so. The Hofstede dimensions model, therefore, focuses upon a variety of social and cultural characteristics that can be analyzed when identifying significant differences in particular nations and how their people tend to respond in social situations. Geert Hofstede was trained as an engineer and began his career working for ten years in that profession. The Hofstede model can be used to reinforce the classic concept of entrepreneurship by emphasizing cultural dimensions that are consistent with Schumpeter’s depictions and perspectives. The Hofstede model compares cultures based on a number of criteria or dimensions.
