ABSTRACT

High levels of formal schooling continue to be the main avenue for elite formation among the Maasai. This chapter addresses the elites’ use of education to fit into different elite positions even as qualifications for these positions become more demanding. Acquiring an education is not a struggle distance-wise for those living near big cities, like Nairobi, where many universities are located. However, those living in areas far-removed from centralized institutions of higher learning, like the Maasai of Narok County, have only recently gained access to the newly built Maasai Mara University. Yet, even with a new university nearby, some Maasai still face challenges in gaining access to tertiary institutions. Technological advancements, however, have brought universities into offices and homes virtually, via online degree programs, thus improving access for more people.
