ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 traces the origins and development of Industry 4.0. The definitions, classifications and criteria used to describe all the previous and current global industrial revolutions not only introduce readers to the topic but also evaluate the economic potential of each revolution. Readers will thus be informed about the challenges and opportunities for organizations and the global economy as a whole resulting from periodic, discontinuous economic change with a particular focus on the Industry of the Future.
