ABSTRACT

Trauma narrative work may be done using story, art, play, dramatic enactment, writing, or discussion.

(1) The cracked glass bowl story has become a “go to” for clients of all ages, as it follows a stages of change model, points to symptoms of trauma, identifies the ambivalence many clients have about discussing traumatic events, and suggests the possibility of hope and resolution.

(2) Another story in this chapter addresses stripping off the layers of defense versus covering up one’s genuine self.

(3) A unique story in this section is about dissociation and may be used with children aged 8 or 9 and older (with play or drawing), as well as with teens. It is helpful in exploring whether the client is aware of his/her dissociative symptoms.
