ABSTRACT

We are living in increasing diverse societies, so it is well timed to ask questions about how we understand leadership and practice being a leader. In this chapter, we explore the concept of leadership and make a contribution to the ongoing sociocultural and pedagogical-orientated discussions of leadership in the sports coaching context. We contend that if there is a desire to understand leadership from sociocultural and pedagogical perspectives, then the focus needs to be on more than individual leadership behaviours. Consequently, the discussion in this chapter focuses on understanding why cases are being made to adopt sociocultural and pedagogical approaches to leadership and how leadership can be organised when viewing these ways. Viewing leadership from sociocultural and pedagogical perspectives recognises that leadership is, amongst other things, a complex, social, cultural, relational, situated and pedagogical practice.
