ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the production and (re)production of coaching knowledge. This is particularly in relation to discourse; that is, the language used to describe and explain the activity. After a discussion on the nature of discourse and the value of studying it within the coaching context, we examine more particularly the discourse of ‘coaching science’ and its effect on athletes. Following this, a possible alternative coaching discourse and associated way of knowing is suggested; one that is both sensitive and considered whilst involving coaches and athletes in their mutual development.
