ABSTRACT
What makes us unique in nature is self-consciousness. A core motive of human self-conscious psychology is the gauging of how others perceive us, how close, and how much recognition we get from others. The first explicit evidence of self-concept and image management are evident starting the end of the second year. From this point in human development, the mind becomes uniquely symbolic and self-reflective, primarily in relation to others.
