ABSTRACT

Latinx Americans have rich cultures with roots in countries that Spain and the United States colonized. However, many Latinx Americans have pushed back against colonization to create their own identities. Contrary to stereotypes, most Latinx Americans were born in the United States and 80% of the group are citizens. Traditional gender roles (marianismo, machismo) have mixed effects on Latinx American adjustment. Many Latinx Americans have adaptive gender roles (e.g., caballerismo) or egalitarian roles. Latinx American LGBTQ people experience discrimination in Latinx American communities, in White LGBTQ communities, and in mainstream communities. Adherence to traditional culture may result in internalizing negative attitudes toward LGBTQ sexuality. Nevertheless, there are instances of LGBTQ support within Latinx American communities.
