ABSTRACT

Stereotypes of BIPOC are devaluing and can interfere with performance. Fortunately, there are interventions that offset the effects of stereotypes. Patterns of prejudice identify which groups society devalues. Identifying commonalities across devalued groups can increase intergroup support among these devalued groups. Microaggressions are a contemporary and subtle form of discrimination. Microinterventions may offset the harmful effects of microaggressions. Intergroup contact, especially extended, can reduce intergroup prejudice. Multiculturalism as an organizational policy benefits BIPOC and is favored by European Americans unless they perceive personal costs. The research in social psychology is primarily at the individual and interpersonal level. But effective reduction of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination requires change at the systems level. Schools, businesses, and government need to proactively create policies that promote inclusion and belonging for outgroups.
