ABSTRACT

Management is composed of at least four major processes: planning, organizing, controlling, and leading. There are many more questions surrounding leadership than there are in planning, organizing, and controlling. What makes a successful leader? Simply, the leader behaves differently. Developing an organization of people involves several factors. First, managers must hire effectively to ensure that people with the right experience, skills, and attitudes are hired into the organization. Second, placement of individuals within the organization must attempt to maximize convergence between individual competencies and aspirations and the purpose of the organization. Third, managers must learn how to develop the skills of people in the organization through training, coaching, developmental assignments, and stretch assignments. Managers must continually reassess and develop the capabilities of their direct reports in these three areas.
