ABSTRACT

This chapter explores diversity, equality, and discrimination issues in the workplace across the dimensions of gender, race/ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation/identity, disability, and age. It also introduces the concept of inequality regimes as an analytical framework for illuminating workplace equality and diversity. Taking this framework, the chapter considers multiple bases of inequality (the six dimensions above); the shape and degree of organisational inequality; the organising processes that produce inequality; the visibility of inequalities within organisations; the perceived legitimacy of organisational inequalities; and employee control and compliance. The chapter reveals how these components of inequality regimes can be found in everyday workplace practices and interactions. Thus, the chapter shows how organisations may contribute to reproducing and reinforcing macro-level patterns of inequality and disadvantage across the six major dimensions of diversity.
