ABSTRACT
The atrabiliousness which pervaded the hearing was, essentially, an expression of hatred and mistrust of the have-nots for the haves. The police, though drawn from the working classes, were disliked from both sides, for, as has been observed, they regulated anti-social behaviour of rich and poor alike. The opinions of Jeffery, the witness who spoke of the necessity for security, were not widely held in 1833.
