ABSTRACT

On Friday, June I, 1833, eighteen days after the affray, another political meeting was held at the Crown and Anchor Tavern in the Strand. This was arranged by the National Political Union for the purpose of considering the conduct of the Government and the police at Cold Bath Fields. The Crown and Anchor meeting was organized by Anti-Whigs who seized this golden opportunity to assail the Government with the ammunition provided by the affray. It was managed by skilled politicians of experience and education, who were resolved to exploit the situation to the full. By contrast, Cold Bath Fields was a crude affair, with indifferent speakers, attended by ruffians and uneducated crowds. Above all, this meeting was held indoors on enclosed premises. Apart from an Inspector Mallalieu, who attended in plain clothes, no police were present.
