ABSTRACT

The meeting at the Crown and Anchor, presided over by John Roebuck, M.P., was one of many but is worthy of full treatment because it was better organized than most and because the speakers were experienced and able to put their case coherendy. The egregious Henry Hunt took the chair at another meeting, chiefly noteworthy for scurrilous remarks about the police and those who testified in their favour. At Hunt’s meeting the petition to Parliament on June 7th was concocted. There were many smaller meetings, mosdy for the purpose of applauding the inquest verdict and collecting funds for the assistance of those in custody who faced prosecution.
