ABSTRACT

Superintendent Baker showed a number of banners which had been taken from members of the national union of the working classes. Most were attached to long poles, many of which were hinged in the middle for portability, with a metal sleeve which slid over the hinge when the pole was extended. Mr Baker also produced the bills calling the meeting which he said were being sold for one penny each, also the proclamation pronouncing the meeting illegal. An ordinary, as opposed to an expert, witness may express opinions on matters within the average man’s comprehension, such as the age or condition of persons; or as to the character of a meeting alleged to be seditious.
