ABSTRACT

The lure of power can manifest simply as wanting to be a part of the various institutions that create and share books. Hashtags link stories or draw readers into a thread where they can find works of interest. Repositories like Wattpad and FanFiction.net allow for readers to find exactly the sort of stories they want to read and to comment directly on those works. The scraping of social media focused on testing whether or not a social media platform could be used as a place to locate works of fiction. Scraping allows the industry to see how using social media as a content generator can be done without asking publishers to take the plunge and do it themselves. In order to scrape a social platform smoothly, Twitter was chosen, as it has more unlocked accounts than Facebook and relies less on imagery than Instagram, though all three make use of the hashtag feature to create linked, searchable media streams.
