ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a central question to the publishing industry: What is a book? It considers what is currently meant by the term ‘book’ and how that definition has altered over time as technology has become more central to our lives. Some writers, in turn, have altered their approach to the industry and have embraced more access to readers via social media, by sharing their works directly on social platforms. Changes in the discourse of the book require us to consider how we can define a book in such a way that it incorporates the evolution of new social technology.
