ABSTRACT
This chapter frames the outreach work of Queer Social Movements in South Africa. The work of Queer and Transgender Organizations has always been documented, but the same cannot be said about their outreach work in schools. In recent years, however, scholars have begun to show interest in the activism of Queer Social Movements in education. Drawing on archival research – reports and publications, policy documents, published research, relevant statistical data, as well as the grey literature from civil society organizations – this chapter engages with and explores the history, aims and development of Queer Social Movements in South Africa. With this chapter, the author hopes to discuss how Queer and Transgender Organizations have responded to schools in creating awareness of gender and sexuality diversity. The chapter makes three arguments. First, there is a history of Queer Social Movements and school collaboration. Second, Queer and Transgender Organizations show an intentional commitment to youth development, and third, they have a multiplicity of resources to share and support schools on gender and sexuality diversity topics.
