ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes insights from the earlier chapters by providing a menu of suggestions for teachers and leaders in their teaching role. The chapter has two parts: one on the teaching process and the other on authenticity. The section on the teaching process is divided into six themes. First, prepare by thinking of the course as a story, identifying best practices, and creating a detailed game plan. Second, build a learning community through frequent interaction with students and by co-creating the learning experience with them. Third, emphasize the big picture by linking your course to other courses and by continually reminded students of the course themes. Fourth, simplify coverage through visualization, clear frameworks, and everyday language. Fifth, make the learning interactive by using a variety of learning experiences (including a flipped classroom and active learning) and by developing active listening skills. Sixth, continually emphasize why the course is important by providing as many examples as possible. The section on authenticity describes three sources: the professors’ passion for the material and concern for students, their dedication to continuous learning from their students and from their own research, and their positive impact beyond the classroom.
