ABSTRACT

This final chapter looks at the present and to the future of psychological science. It reviews several subfields that appear poised to grow in prominence and importance in upcoming decades. This chapter also examines globalization in psychology and changing understandings of gender and intersectional identities before turning to health psychology, positive psychology, and ecopsychology. Next, the chapter looks at historical developments in psychology and law, with examination of contributions from Hugo Münsterberg and Elizabeth Loftus. The chapter then reviews a series of growing topical areas, including motivation, psychology of religion and spirituality, and new methodologies, including both big data and qualitative approaches. The chapter then examines recent events involving psychologists and enhanced interrogation techniques in the War on Terror. The chapter, and the entire book, concludes with a return to questions of unity and diversity in psychology.
