ABSTRACT

The empirical philosophies of Francis Bacon, John Locke, George Berkeley, and David Hume are set forth in this chapter. The implications of empiricism for women are also examined in the works of Mary Wollstonecraft and Harriet Taylor. The larger implications of empiricism for studies of the senses, learning, motivation, education, and thinking are also included. The chapter focuses attention on the contrast between empiricism and older epistemologies grounded in authority.
