ABSTRACT
Demographic growth and the consolidation of states in the core areas of western Europe triggered a partly colonial expansionism in the direction of Muslim Iberia, the eastern Mediterranean, central Europe, Wales and Ireland. Besides incidental conquest of territory, this expansive movement also secured the west European connection to the commercial world system that took shape in the thirteenth century.
