ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 analyzes the occurrences of Odin in the courtly romances, in which he is mentioned twice or perhaps three times. In Sigrgarðs saga frœkna, the antagonist’s spear is marked with the sign of Odin, and in a learned prologue of Sigurðar saga þǫgla, Odin is said to be the teacher of magicians. In Máguss saga jarls, an unknown man by the name of “Víðfǫrull” appears. Elements in the description of Víðfǫrull are reminiscent of the descriptions of Odin in the kings’ sagas, but the identification is uncertain.
