ABSTRACT

This third chapter concentrates on the music of English. It is a specific kind of music which is played by alternating strong and weak beats, a rhythmic pattern which affects the meaning of utterances. Then, there is a question of how to deal with intonation values, and especially the prosodic pattern which particularly concerns the melodic line of an utterance in a speech situation. Intonation and rhythm are closely related, and therefore interdependent as regards the production and interpretation of an utterance. These different linguistic elements can be heard in everyday speech and constitute the basic rhythmic structure of spoken English on which the music will rest.
