ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on two animated films: Inside Out (2015, Pete Docter, Ronnie Del Carmen) and The Emoji Movie (2017, Tony Leondis), both of which externalize various emotions in a pictorial manner. The first deals with a young girl experiencing a difficult period, and imagines her mind as having a Headquarters in which the five major emotions reside. The second concerns the world of emojis and centers on a “meh” icon who violates the requirement of communicating one singular feeling by conveying many contradictory ones.
