ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book concentrates on films that deal with “negative” emotions—ones like anxiety, jealousy, vengeance, or grief—that are experienced as unpleasant. This is for two reasons. First, dramas tend to focus on these types of feelings. Second, finding thoughtful films about positive emotions like joy or love is quite difficult. Most people watch a film without ever considering all the complicated processes that make it possible for them to comprehend the storyline and react ardently to the characters and drama. Despite its apparent naturalness, watching a film entails numerous complicated practices, judgments, and inferences that viewers have internalized over years of moviegoing.
