The authenticity of the document has been strongly attacked; probably most scholars believe it authentic, but it is difficult to expel all doubt, for there is little evidence at this date by which to check its statements with sufficient precision (see especially, Šanjek’s and Dondaine’s articles, and Thouzellier, pp. 13–14^).
