ABSTRACT

The evidence of the witnesses at the canonisation process in 1233 forms a major source for the personality and activities of Dominic; these extracts give an idea of the nature of the material, and its repetitiveness, and I give the depositions of brother William of Montferrat and brother Stephen, the most vivid of the witnesses. The most recent edition is by Walz, MOPH Vol. XVI, pp. 89–194, with the texts on pp. 123íf.; full French translation in Vicaire (1965), pp. 35íf.; on the early history of the process, see E. W. Kemp, Canonisation and Authority in the Western Church (Oxford, 1948).
