These extracts from the Middleton manuscripts of typical accounts of wood sales illustrate some of the problems connected with the use of such accounts for precise indications of contemporary prices and volumes. A hagge is a wooded enclosure, a coppice; a goad is a measure, usually 15 ft but with local variations.
