ABSTRACT

In short, Wallen’s theory is that each of us has intentions in every interaction, the peoples translate (or encode) our intentions into words and actions, the peoples are interacting with translate (decode) our words and actions, and the decoding determines the initial emotional impact. The process of perception (or interpretation, or judgment, or assumption) occurs constantly, and in nanoseconds. It is the micro-moment in a macro-tapestry of interactions and beliefs. The family systems concept of fusion means to take everything personally, bouncing like a pinball from on reactive moment to the next. Differentiation allows one to be in relationship and to care about impact on self and on other without swallowing it whole.
