ABSTRACT

It seems like we persist through time in a way we don't persist through space. This seems to be the source of the view that time, unlike space, passes or flows. This chapter gives an introduction to the metaphysics of persistence focusing on our first-personal awareness of our own persistence. Do we need a persisting self as ‘metaphysical glue’ to provide unity of agency, or should we abandon the self, as Buddhists often recommend, as a way to avoid suffering?
